Saint Etienne. The name alone is part of why I like this group so much. The name conjures class and style -- with the French Flavor. Of course, those of you who are familiar with Saint Etienne know that they are not from France -- and that the group's name was inspired by a soccer team from the town with that name.

I don't exactly know how to describe their style. It's danceable; it's pop and it's got that European flavor that seldom originates from our side of the Atlantic -- or that is seldom played on commercial radio. I think Foxbase Alpha, this group's first album, is my favorite way to describe their style. Then, there's the chanteuse who's most associated with Saint Etienne, Sarah Cracknell*. Her solo effort, Lipslide fully demonstrates her capability and style. I'm partial to the floor-shaking single "Desert Baby." There's also "Coastal Town," which I've heard was written by her in the 80's but released on this 1997 cd!
